Helping Parents Ensure Success
We all want our children to be successful and pursue their dreams. But here in Boulder County and across the United States, Latino students don't achieve success as often as their Anglo peers.
Latino students start kindergarten already two years behind, and as they grow older, they slip even farther. This leads to high Latino drop-out and incarceration rates, more Latino teen pregnancies, and more frequent smoking, drug use and gang membership.
It turns out there is a lot you can do as a parent to make sure your kids are successful and able to pursue their dreams. But you have to start early, long before our children even enter school. ELPASO is a new movement creating a critical mass of well-informed and skilled Latino parents who will help ensure that more Latino children arrive at kindergarten ready to learn. Our bilingual, bicultural School Readiness Coordinators are knocking on doors in Latino neighborhoods every day, connecting parents to early childhood and family resources. They are also recruiting parent leaders, in turn, are teaching other Latino parents how to ensure their children are ready for kindergarten.
